Some drummers prefer the sound of a bass drum head with a hole anywhere from 4-8 inches somewhere on the bass drum head. This gives the beat more of a tight kick sound, rather than a muffled sound. This can also be more of an advantage for live sound or recording as mics can capture the bass beat better when inserted into the hole or placed right in front of it.
