Robert Zildjian formed Sabian in 1981 after a falling out with his brother Armand Zildjian. Using years of experience he had developed from his past career, Sabian were always going to go on to become one the leading cymbal manufacturers in the world. These days they can list a whole host of big name artists who play their cymbals. Perhaps most notably the likes of Jojo Mayer and Chad Smith.
Designed with the astonishing Jojo Mayer, OMNI is a completely unique type of cymbal; it is not a crash or a ride, it is simply OMNI. Sabian's vision was to create a cymbal with outstanding sonic contrast both when played own its own and with a full cymbal set. Every Sabian OMNI cymbal has a medium-weight centre with a traditional, unlathed finish, coupled with an extra thin, natrual finish edge for the ultimate combination of sonic abilities.
Playing closer to the bell provides an extremely clear stick definition that can cut through any musical style. The main unlathed body of the cymbal gives an extremely clear and unique ride sound, due to the nuances of the hammer pattern. Closer to the thin edge of the cymbal gives a snappy crash sound with a long sustain.
Sabian OMNI are available in both the AAX and HHX cymbal ranges. The main difference between the two is that the HHX OMNI is hand hammered giving it a dark, simmering sound, whereas the AAX OMNI is automated anvil hammered giving it a brighter, explosive sound.
