Tama Drums are a brand of drum kits and hardware manufactured by the Japanese musical instrument company, Hoshino Gakki. They began manufacturing drums in 1961 under the name “Star Drums”, named the owner Hoshino which translates to “star field”. The drums were manufactured at Hoshino’s subsidiary, Tama Seisakusho, which had opened in 1962 to manufacture Ibanez guitars and amplifiers. By 1974, Hoshino decided to make a concerted effort to make high-quality drums and hardware and start marketing its drums under the Tama brand. Tama was the name of the owner’s wife, and is also a homophone with the Japanese word meaning “jewel”. “Star” continues to be used in the names of many Tama drum models to this day.

Power. Flexibility. Visibility. With Tama Superstar Hyper-Drive kits, your audience will hear your every note and see your every move. Hyper-Drive’s unique combination of modern and traditional drum sizes offers sonic power with clarity, unparalleled set-up flexibility, and complete performance visibility. The full, powerful character and rich resonance of the Superstar drums were achieved by utilising carefully selected maple shells and focusing intently on shell moulding and the bearing edge shape.

Tama Superstar Hyper-Drive drums feature Tama’s Sound Bridge High Tension Lugs and Star-Cast Mounting system. The Sound Bridge high-tension, low-mass lug was specifically designed for Superstar. Sound Bridge’s unique structure looks much like a traditional high-tension lug, but the body of the lug “floats” over the shell to minimise shell contact so the drum can resonate to its fullest. All Superstar rack toms are fitted with the Star-Cast Mounting System, similar to the higher end Starclassic drums. This unique system offers total tom isolation and unhindered shell resonance without the adverse effect on tuning or complicated head changes found in less advanced suspension designs.
