Tama Drums are a brand of drum kits and hardware manufactured by the Japanese musical instrument company, Hoshino Gakki. They began manufacturing drums in 1961 under the name "Star Drums", named the owner Hoshino which translates to "star field". The drums were manufactured at Hoshino's subsidiary, Tama Seisakusho, which had opened in 1962 to manufacture Ibanez guitars and amplifiers. By 1974, Hoshino decided to make a concerted effort to make high-quality drums and hardware and start marketing its drums under the Tama brand. Tama was the name of the owner's wife, and is also a homophone with the Japanese word meaning "jewel". "Star" continues to be used in the names of many Tama drum models to this day.

Tama Imperialstar complete drum kits provide everything a drummer needs at an affordable price. The Imperialstar line offers various choices of kit configurations and finishes, availability of add-on drums, precisely-processed drum shells and reliable, durable hardware. Imperialstar may appeal to beginner drummers due to the price, but more experienced intermediate players enjoy playing great-sounding Imperialstar kits in every music genre from jazz and R&B to rock and metal.

Featuring Imperialstar spur brackets on the bass drum to provide maximum durability and stability, as well as Tama L-Rod and Omnisphere tom holder systems which have received acclaim from drummers for over 25 years. These systems offer easy positioning, maximum flexibility, stability and greater sound than standard designs which penetrate the shell interior and can inhibit resonance. The Tama Imperialstar 100% poplar 8m 6ply shells also feature Tama's Precision Bearing Edges. A drum's bearing edge is one of the most important components in drum sound: Tama's advanced edge-cutting process provides extremely precise bearing edges, which allow their shells to ring openly and fully, and provide a wide range of tune ability, sensitivity and response.
