During a 3 year process Yamaha consulted with drumming legend Steve Gadd on every aspect of the Recording Custom. The result is a revamped kit that retains the familiarity and comfort of a classic while rolling with the times to remain at the forefront of modern drums. Here’s Steve’s thoughts – “The Bass Drum has a nice fat sound, the drum responds to different heads on it, and my goal was to have a simple Snare Drum design that could respond to a wide range of tuning. I think we did a great job, the new Recording Customs sound great and I think you’ll like them’.”

The Shells

6 ply all Birch shells produce well defined tones. In addition to its natural EQ and punchy power, birch shells are known to reduce unwanted noise and prevent interference when drums are set up close together. The unique sonic characteristics of birch wood ensure that each stroke is clearly defined, making it widely considered to be the ideal choice for drummers in the studio.

The Lugs

Modern Recording Customs now include a heavier lug which helps control the overall tone of the drum without using a mute. This allows the artist to concentrate on the true tone of the birch shells.

The Bearing Edge

After extensive testing Steve Gadd opted for a 30 degree bearing edge. The increased connection with the drum head means that the drum responds to change of heads more than an average kit, giving the player much more flexibility and choice with their sound.
