Paiste is a Swiss-based Estonian musical instrument manufacturing company who have been operating and making cymbals 1906. It is the world’s third largest manufacturer of cymbals, gongs, and metal percussion and can boast John Bonham amongst their endorsers. Paiste are are responsible for several cymbal-making innovations including the use of B8 bronze as a cymbal alloy, the sound edge hi-hat and unlathed cymbals.

The beginnings of the Giant Beat range are intimately related to the early period of rock music. Around the mid 1960s, Paiste discovered and started experimenting with the CuSn8 (or B8) bronze alloy, an alloy which differed to the usual B20 bronze used to manufacture most cymbals – CuSn8 bronze consists of 92% copper and 8% tin, compared to 80% copper and 20% tin in B20 bronze.

Around the same time, the world is experiencing the rapid expansion of Rock music, which emerges forcefully from the foundations of Blues, Rock’n Roll, Folk, and Country as the British Invasion takes the stage with bands like The Rolling Stones, The Animals, The Beatles, The Kinks and The Who. The electrified sound they generate is groundbreaking. Popular music, simply stated, becomes loud and irreverent.

The new CuSn8 bronze alloy that Paiste were working with turned out to be perfect for the new soundscape with its amplified volume and frequencies. In 1967 Paiste launched Giant Beat cymbals, which are characterised by warmth, strength and brilliance such as drummers had not known before. Key drummers John Bonham, Nick Mason, Keith Moon and Carl Palmer immediately embraced the new cymbals and thrived on the revolutionary sound.
